I have been a member of my parish for nearly 20 years. I first got involved as a volunteer in communications while serving on the Parish Council, which eventually led to joining the staff as Communications Coordinator. After four years in that role, I accepted the position of Director of Parish Life and Evangelization.
While I was always diligent in my work, this new role challenged me in entirely new ways. I was now leading people who had once been my peers and friends, and that transition came with its share of growing pains and difficult conversations. When I accepted the position of Pastoral Care Manager and later received this ministry assignment from my bishop, I did not understand the full scope of what awaited me. I expected to manage pastoral care within a small Mid-South healthcare system. I soon found myself responsible for healthcare system formation, completing certification in Catholic bioethics, and leading a culturally and denominationally diverse pastoral care team.
The team included four religious sisters from Africa, a missionary priest from India, and an evangelical lay minister. I inherited serious personnel, policy, cultural, and mission concerns.
These circumstances placed me in the middle of competing cultures, personalities, theological perspectives, organizational expectations, and understandings of Catholic identity. I needed to address policy violations, clarify roles, manage conflict, support religious vocations, preserve relationships, and protect the Catholic mission of the healthcare system.
Individual Leadership Coaching gave me a place to process these responsibilities with honesty and prayerful discernment. Coaching helped me separate personalities from behaviors, cultural differences from policy expectations, and emotional reactions from leadership responsibilities. I learned to ask better questions, document concerns carefully, establish clear boundaries, and address difficult matters with charity and truth.
My coach walked with me through some of the heaviest days of this ministry. He provided a confidential and trusted space where I could speak openly without fear of judgment. He helped me examine my own reactions, recognize what belonged to me as a leader, and release what was outside my authority.
My coach reflects the fruit of the Holy Spirit described in Galatians 5:22–23. I have experienced his love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These gifts shape the way he listens, challenges, encourages, and accompanies me. He does not offer simple answers to complex problems. He helps me discern the next faithful step.
Because of coaching, I approach conflict with greater clarity and less fear. I communicate expectations more directly. I work to understand cultural differences without allowing culture to excuse harmful conduct or policy violations. I seek accountability without losing compassion. I have also learned leadership requires both pastoral presence and the courage to address behavior damaging the mission or the people entrusted to my care. Most importantly, pause and pray; bring Christ into all of it.
